Bad Dreams with Good Friends part 15

“Mark! Watch yer step!” Sean called out.

A loud splash caught Mark’s attention. He growled with exasperation and turned to look. He was shocked to see spooky tendrils of black rising up out of puddles of water. Several of them were pulling Sean down into water. He was falling head first, sinking into what appeared to be a shallow puddle.

“Jaaaaaack!” Mark roared, as he darted towards him. He grabbed onto Sean’s legs and pulled as hard as he could. “Let go, dammit! Let go!” Mark roared, struggling to pull Sean free. Bubbles were coming up out of the water as Sean struggled to breathe.

The bouncing of the SepticEye came loudly at them. Mark glanced up to see it increase in size. It bounced one last time, its tentacle slashing at the smoky tendrils. The tendrils shrieked and Mark fell back as Sean fell free of their grasp.

“Run!” Mark yelled, as he pushed Sean off of himself. He pulled Sean to his feet next to him, running across a series of puddles.

“Dear LORD!” Sean yelled as he tried to keep up with Mark, “What was that?!”

“I don’t know! Just keep running! Keep running!” Mark yelled.

They hurried into the village, whose streets were dark with fogs. It was difficult to see, but some of the lit windows cut through the darkness so they could see. It seemed like a strange and ominous place. Mark felt like a monster was waiting around every single corner to jump out and catch them.

“I’m so tiiiiired of this!” Mark growled.

“You and I both,” Sean panted, “Now I’m all wet! I could use a fresh set of clothes!”

Mark looked down at his own clothes, “Yea…me too.”

The SepticEye bounced up onto Sean’s shoulder. It seemed to tickle his neck, causing him to giggle. “You adorable little creeper!” Sean giggled.

“Pleeease…” Mark moaned, “Pleeease be no monsters!”

“Yea, I’m rightly tired of this,” Sean sighed, “Mark, you need to pay more attention! I was busy paying attention to what you were doing because you weren’t paying attention!”

“I’m paying attention!” Mark declared, “I’m just…a little tired.”

“I know you are, Mark,” Sean sighed, “But you need to pay attention!”

The SepticEye hopped off of Sean’s shoulder and headed through a gate. It hopped along the pathway, up the stairs to the front door of what appeared to be an old inn. Its shadows were strung long across the front yard, cast by the light of a single oil lamp.

“Creeeepy,” Mark shuddered.

“Kinda cozy lookin’ I think,” Sean shrugged.

Mark took a deep breath as he followed Sean into the inn. It was cozy but quiet. There was nobody around to greet them. The main room was certainly warm and inviting, but Mark had been expecting at least an inn keep to help them.

“Well this place is rather quiet!” Sean noted, as he looked around.

“You don’t find it rather…creepy?” Mark asked, hesitantly.

“Not at all! Rather comfy!” Sean smiled.
